Supplemental Training
In addition to the training required for registered positions, the Boy Scouts of America offers leaders with training beyond what is provided in This Is Scouting and leader-specific training.
Weather Hazards
This online course offers training on how to deal with various weather hazards a unit might encounter during outdoor activities. It is REQUIRED for ALL tour permits, and needs to be renewed every two years.
BALOO
At least one adult giving leadership to a pack overnighter must complete Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO), and be present on campouts. BALOO trains participants to properly understand the importance of program intent, Youth Protection guidelines, health and safety, site selection, age-appropriate activities, and sufficient adult participation.
Outdoor Webelos Leader Skills (OWLS)
This training is a full day outdoor training for Webelos Leaders, to help them cover the Outdoorsman, Geologist, Forester, and Readyman activity badges. This class provides hands on learning of knots, cooking, tent pitching, hiking and more. This course is required for any Webelos Leader conducting a den campout.
Safe Swim Defense
Before a BSA group may engage in swimming activities of any kind, a minimum of one adult leader must complete Safe Swim Defense training, have a commitment card (No. 34243) with them, and agree to use the eight defenses in this plan. This course can be completed online, and needs to be renewed every two years.
Safety Afloat
Safety Afloat has been developed to promote boating and boating safety and to set standards for safe unit activity afloat. Before a BSA group may engage in an excursion, expedition, or trip on the water (canoe, raft, sailboat, motorboat, rowboat, tube, or other craft), adult leaders for such activity must complete Safety Afloat Training, have a commitment card with them, and be dedicated to full compliance with all nine points of Safety Afloat. This course can be completed online, and needs to be renewed every two years.
Wood Badge for the 21st Century
The primary purpose of the Wood Badge experience is to strengthen Scouting in our units, districts, and councils. The Wood Badge “ticket” represents your commitment to complete a set of personal goals relating to your Scouting Position. These goals will significantly strengthen the program in which you are involved. In addition, the ticket gives you an opportunity to practice and demonstrate a working knowledge of the leadership skills represented during the course.
